“I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. In pain you will bring forth children.”
~ Genesis 3:16
“Why does God do that?” I thought. What’s the point of making childbirth painful?
God does that, I believe, to teach us (humanity) that love hurts. That love is not without pain. Not without sacrifice.
Thinking about that Bible verse, I am reminded of Shizuku, the writer in Whisper of the Heart (1995).
The act of bringing her creation into the world — writing — causes Shizuku to sacrifice a lot. And it hurts.
The act of bringing her creation into the world, Shizuku realizes…
…is not what she imagined it to be.
My former parish priest once said “Every person is a story.”
When a woman gives birth, she is, like a writer, bringing a new story into the world.
