What do these people have in common?

#1: They are all “The Other.”

#2: They are all naked.

When I say “They are all ‘The Other,'” what I mean is: There is something about all of these people that sets them apart from their fellow human beings.

Cortana is an artificial intelligence (AI). As a result, despite her human behavior and appearance, she will never be truly human. She will never be a flesh-and-blood person like her creator and the people she serves.

Dr. Manhattan has superpowers. Over time, he feels distant from his fellow human beings because of his powers.

Mystique is a Mutant. A different kind of human being. With unique powers.

Whether or not you believe Adam and Eve actually existed, what is generally agreed about the two of them is this: Adam and Eve represent mankind as it was supposed to be. But, because of sinning, Adam and Eve lost their innocence.

We live in an imperfect world. As a result, a person can’t be naked in public and know, with certainty, that everyone who sees them has their best interests at heart and sees them as the human being they are. There are going to be people who only see a naked person as the pleasure they can provide.

For example: If a man walks in on a woman when she’s in the bathroom, naked, the woman will most likely frantically cover herself, turn away, and/or yell “Get out!”

Why?

Because the woman can’t trust this man. The woman doesn’t know that, when this man is looking at her exposed butt, he is seeing her as the human being she is and not as a means to experience pleasure.

Covering up, turning away, yelling — these are defense mechanisms. The woman isn’t doing these things because she’s thinking “I’m so ashamed! My body is a dirty, despicable thing.” The woman is doing these things because she’s thinking “I’m more than my body. Don’t see me as just breasts, a butt, a vagina, etc. See me as the human being I am.”

What’s my point?

This:

It is not only their superpowers, or the fact that they’re an AI, or the fact that they’re a Mutant, but the fact that they can be naked without shame, too, that sets Cortana, Dr. Manhattan, Mystique, and Adam and Eve apart from their fellow human beings. Their nudity is a reminder of a state of being that we can’t experience because of the imperfect world we live in.

There are people who are unashamed of their nudity.

But there will always be the need to cover up, the need to turn away.

We can’t, in this life, be naked without shame. (Genesis 2:25)

Theology of the Body

Why am I talking about nudity?

Because everyone has a body.

Because a person’s body is an undeniable and essential aspect of who they are.

Because there will always be the need to look beyond a person’s butt, breasts, abs, etc. and see that person as the human being they are, not as a means to experience pleasure. (1 Peter 1:22)
