Is it a sin to be naked?

Note #1: This post is me expressing my personal opinion. Also: Since I am a Catholic, my thoughts on nudity will be influenced by my Catholic faith. And my thoughts on nudity are in flux, and so this post is subject to change. Finally: The language in this post could be called “explicit.” However, I think that such language is necessary.

Note #2: This post contains artistic depictions of male and female nudity.

Is nudity in a non-sexual context, in a public or private setting, a sin?

For these reasons:

The human body is good, not evil.

“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

The reason a person is naked must be taken into account.

If a person is naked in order to arouse others, than in that case being naked would be a sin because the person is trying to get people around them to commit the sin of lust.

If, on the other hand, a person who is naked isn’t trying to arouse people, than I, personally, think that in such a situation that being naked wouldn’t be committing a sin. If there is any sin, the sin comes from the people who choose to give in to their desires and lust after the naked person.

On another note:

Why is there a stigma about nudity?

It goes back to Adam and Eve and when they ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. (Genesis 3:7)

Eve in the Garden of Eden by Anna Lea Merritt

Adam and Eve don’t cover themselves because they think their  bodies are some dirty, evil,  and shameful thing.

Adam and Eve cover themselves because they’re afraid that one will look at the other as an object, not as a human being.

At the moment they eat the fruit, Adam and Eve aren’t seeing each other as human beings, but as a means to attain pleasure — a means to an end. That’s why Adam and Eve cover themselves. Eve is implicitly say to Adam “I am more than my vagina.” And Adam is implicitly saying to Eve “I am more than my penis.”

If Adam and Eve hadn’t eaten the fruit, than the human race would still be naked. It was God’s plan that everyone would be naked and yet not be ashamed. (Genesis 2:25)

In the perfect world that God creates, everyone is a nudist.

But because of Satan, that perfect world doesn’t last long.
