Examining “Eureka Seven” (SPOILERS)

Examining my favorite moment from Eureka Seven: Maurice confronting Eureka about the death of his mother in the episode “Don’t You Want Me?”

Eureka: “You don’t like your mama ’cause she looks like this? It’s mama’s smile. Do you hate it that I smiled after I took the life of your real mama? I would understand if you did. Because even if you decided to hate me forever, mama loves you, Maurice. That’s why I don’t want you to go through what I had to go through, feeling regret every minute of my life.”

Maurice wants to kill Renton, Eureka’s love. He hates Renton because Renton makes Eureka smile. I think Maurice sees Eureka smiling as an insult: Like Eureka’s smile is saying to him, “Look how happy the young woman who killed your mother is. Look at all she has. And, remember: She is the reason you lost the person you loved the most.”

Eureka does love Maurice. That’s why Eureka doesn’t want Maurice to do what she did: Kill a person. Because she knows that, if he does, it will cause him nothing but regret for the rest of his life.

It was after Eureka killed Maurice’s mother, when Eureka saw Maurice — scared, bloodied, and hiding in the dirt — that she realized what she had done. In order to make up for what she had done, Eureka became the mother for Maurice and his two siblings, Maeter and Linck.

Maurice confronting Eureka about the death of his mother in the episode “Don’t You Want Me?” is my favorite moment in Eureka Seven because it shows that love is like a light in the darkness. It proves too the passage from the Bible, “…he has put eternity into man’s heart…”* No matter who we are or where we come from, we are all capable of love because we are all created in God’s image.

*Ecclesiastes 3:11.
